Discussion:
Is Elaine a Slut?

Today in Chicago the episode where Elaine meets a guy in a store and he
promises to get Elaine a discount.

Anyway Jerry asks Elaine "Did you sleep with him yet"? Elaine replies "I
just met him this morning." Jerry counters with "It's been known to
happen"

And in later episodes where Elaine goes nuts and wipes her butt on the
germophob's keyboard. She thinks Elaine is loose too?

So is Elaine?

From various episodes, I got the impression Elaine used to give it up
frequently.

Give it up? Give what up?

This is a question on the language. English is not my
mother tongue, even though I know it quite well and
use it frequently.

I do understand the subject here. But I don't really
understand the expression "give it up" in this field.

Put out. Um, no, that's probably another American English
colloquialism. Uh, er, she was named Bluebonnet because she'd spread
for 70 cents. Er, no, that's from a '60s commercial on American TV.
How about she has round heels (a pushover)? No, another American
phrase.

Uh, lets try this: she meets a guy, she likes the guy, she doesn't
feel the need to be engaged or even go out for six months before
having sex with him. Or even six days...or six hours...

I hope this helps.

So it is a bona fide American English colloquialism?

I thought that maybe we had met with a home made
translation say from French or Japanese or whatever.
It is not absolutely obvious to me where Uncle Vince

Yeah I know, I just did not recognise the expression for it.

In some episode when Jerry and Elaine is talking about
seduction, Elaine says something like;
"We (women) play mostly defense." If that is your attitude
to the whole thing then "Give Up" makes more sense.

I am from the United States. It is understood, in some areas of this country
anyway, that the "it" is either sex, the vagina or the penis. It depends on
who's doing the talking.

All in all, not including her on/off relationship with Puddy, Elaine didn't
seem to have sex any more frequently than Jerry or Kramer. Ah, maybe she
did. I don't know. Argh, I don't have a cool Seinfeld expression to end
with.

If you had something I wanted, and you didn't necessarily give that item
away to anyone who asked, I might say to you, in reference to that item,
"Give it up." As in, give me the item.

So Elaine has something Men want. Thus, she sometimes, "gives it up."

She has actually rejected a few, including:

The guy who took "it" out
The subway riding, TV guiding, manekin making guy
The guy who remembered a tic tac toe outcome but not their conversation at a
party
The allegedly deaf co-worker
The furniture mover
The guy who shoved tissue up his nose during a nosebleed at the intervention

I saw that actor last night on an episode of "Scrubs". He played a patient
that needed to have his gall bladder removed. He kept asking that sarcastic
doctor and then Turk if it was necessary to have his gall bladder taken out.

She wasn't interested in Jimmy. Even if she were, Elaine probably would have
bypassed a sexual siuation with him. She would have known it would be a
threesome: her, Jimmy in person, and Jimmy in the third person.

I'm hip to the whole "it" thing! Like I said in my original
post, I do know what the subject is.

What I found interesting, and maybe a telltale sign of
cultural differences, was the "give up" angle. As if a sexual
encounter between a man and a woman is something
that only he wants, and she, when all hope is lost,
"gives up" or somehow stops resisting.

I do not think that that would be a common attitude
among americans, but maybe elsewhere.
